Entanglements in a More-Than-Human World The Silent Scream of Cells Marianne Lechner (AT), Katharina Mayrhofer (AT) In an era increasingly shaped by the consequences of the Anthropocene, traditional „Human-Centered Design“ is reaching its limits. To design more responsibly, we must expand our scope to include the perspectives and lifeworlds of non-human actors. The Approach „Entanglements in a More-Than-Human World“ is a research-led workshop framework that utilizes More-Than-Human (MTH) Design methodologies. The objective is to make the complex interdependencies between human activity and our environment visible. Rather than viewing design solely as a tool for human utility, this method functions as an Ethical Reflexivity Framework, compelling designers to critically examine their own position within a larger ecological network. The inquiry is structured through a series of eight micro-exercises that guide participants through a process of radical perspective-taking: Sensory Sensitization: By consciously observing the physical presence of an entity (shape, texture, sound, smell), participants redefine their relationship with it beyond purely functional or utilitarian terms. Relational Mapping: Participants map their emotional and interactional connections. This stage uncovers power dynamics (e.g., dominant vs. submissive) and the affective quality of the entanglement. Causal Reflection: We investigate the direct and indirect impacts of our design practice, aimed at identifying „blind spots“ within our creative process. Transformation: The process concludes by identifying specific, actionable steps to mitigate harm and foster more regenerative, ethical design practices. These exercises serve as a situated laboratory for the designer. They move us beyond the comfort of the human-centric gaze and foster a form of animistic attentiveness. By acknowledging the „Other“ as an active stakeholder in the design process, our work transforms from a purely instrumental activity into a practice of care, responsibility, and deep connection.
